An open letter to Apple Inc.

Mr. Tim Cook
CEO, Apple Inc.
1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA 95014

October 15, 2014

Dear Tim,

On behalf of concerned parents, I’m writing to ask for your help. First, though, I’d like to acknowledge your company’s tremendous success.

You run the most culturally powerful company of all time

Ok, some might say you’re #2. But it’s clear that you make fantastic, well-known products that have changed the way we work, play, and live.

Adults love them: “I’m waiting to see what Apple will make me buy next.”

Kids love them: “Mom, just get me something with an Apple on it.”

Apes love them: “Oooga.”  (Apps for Apes help to stimulate their lives)

You run a tight ship. You generate more sales than Google, Amazon, and Facebook combined and your iPhone revenue surpasses Microsoft’s entire business. You’re “wildly profitable” (fiscal 3Q14 results). As the most valuable company in the world, you have unparalleled resources and reach. You’ve amassed 800 million iTunes accounts (with accompanying e-mail and credit card information) and hold over $150 billion in cash.

It’s been an impressive run. Congratulations.

With success and leadership comes responsibility.

Kids are using your devices, a lot

Three-quarters of U.S. children have access to a mobile device. Most of them are Apple-branded. Forty percent of kids use iPads before they can speak. This data from Common Sense Media Research is over a year old. Babies try to swipe TV screens. iPads dominate in schools (95% of the educational market).

Children use these devices on the go and they are also spending massive amounts of time on them at home and at school. They spend 7.5 hours/day on electronics (2009 data). Kids are increasingly living in mobile-only households that are ditching wired connections and landlines for convenience and economy.

People require WiFi or 3G/4G network access to operate your devices. WiFi penetration is growing rapidly, in our homes, offices, schools, airplanes, airports, and that perfect hot spot your kids love to grab while in the car waiting for the light to turn green.

Cupertino, we have a problem: WiFi & kids

Especially to children.

OK, not all radiation is bad. Scientists (even NASA) and others investigate natural and man-made frequencies and the potential applications for grounding, healing, and protection (look up “earthing” and “Schumann Resonance“). Good radiation reduces blood viscosity and enhances other physiologic processes.

But that’s not what’s going on here. Most radiation is deeply concerning.

There are thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies (see Bioinitiative, Electrosmog Bibliographies) that link the impacts of communication-frequency radiation to serious health problems including cancer, neurological disease, immune dysfunction, disruption of the blood-brain-barrierDNA damageinfertility, and statistically significant neurological and cognitive disorders such as headaches, dizziness, tremors, decreased memory and attention, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, decreased reaction times, sleep disturbances, and visual disruptions.

“Radiation exposures are higher for children than adults because children have thinner skulls, and their brains have higher water and higher ion (charged particle) content…these three factors enhance radiation penetration.” Pediatr Nurs. 2013;39(2):65-70

“When electrical properties are considered, a child’s head’s absorption can be over two times greater, and absorption of the skull’s bone marrow can be ten times greater than adults. Therefore, a new certification process is needed that incorporates different modes of use, head sizes, and tissue properties.” Electromagn Biol Med. 2012 Mar;31(1):34-51

“Based on this review… as well as [those in] the… recent Bioinitiative Report… it must be concluded that the existing public safety limits are inadequate to protect public health, and that new public safety limits, as well as limits on further deployment of untested technologies, are warranted.” – Pathophysiology. 2009:16(2-3):157-177

An iPad has five operational antennae. Unless these antennas are individually disabled, they will continually emit bursts of high frequency radiation (GHz) every four seconds or approximately 900 spikes an hour. This radiation is unnatural and jarring. The human body’s frequency is about 7.83Hz while WiFi frequencies are 2,400,000,000 to 5,000,000,000 Hz. A child holding onto a WiFi-activated iPad will absorb significant amounts of microwave radiation into her hands, lap, and face, even when there is no active uploading or downloading activity occurring.

If your children use iPads at home or school, listen to these two short videos. Note: an Acoustimeter is an RF detection device that measures an iPad’s pulsed microwave radiation.

Video #1: WiFi ON and connected to internet. We hear rapid pulsing from the router emitting beacon signals and irregular spikes from the iPad:

Video #2: WiFi ON and not connected to internet. We hear jarring spikes solely from the iPad.

Children are already more vulnerable; parents should know radiation exposure is cumulative over a lifetime. This isn’t news to Apple. The iPad user guide advises that “iPad contains components and radios that emit electromagnetic fields” and you direct customers to the Legal area of your site for “steps you can take to minimize exposure.” [p147]

People joke about iPad addiction but it’s no laughing matter. Children have great difficulty self-regulating usage and more infants lack key motor skills due to an obsessive iPad “habit.” Nearly all teens are online (95%) and own cell phones (78%). They consume online media voraciously. And it’s not just a kid problem. Internet addiction is being considered for inclusion in the next Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-V).

You surely know that the vast majority of people do not restrict their iPad and iPhone usage to minimize exposure. Like all large consumer products companies, Apple conducts extensive market research to understand how your products are used by your different target markets so you can deliver improved features and functionality.

4G LTE is the newest wireless communications standard for mobile devices that’s up to 10x faster than 3G networks. Apple is designing amped up products with multiple antennae to benefit from 4G’s full bandwidth power. Are they safe? The first study on LTE radio frequency by peer-reviewed Clinical Neurophysiology shows that activity on both sides of the brain is affected by 30 minutes of exposure to LTE cellphone radiation. 4G appears to intensify health risks.

Parents: Should You Nix the WiFi?

Apple has an ethical responsibility to its customers

To date, you’ve sold over 500 million iPhones and 170 million iPads. It’s not a stretch to say that Apple products are a leading source of radio frequency electromagnetic radiation exposure in homes and schools today. Apple is reaping billions of dollars in profits from the sale of products that are putting our children (and us all) at risk.

I’m not saying that you’re breaking any laws. Nor do I believe that that Apple is the only player in this health equation. But I will suggest that Apple is uniquely positioned to be the most important player.

Apple is admired.

Apple is influential.

Apple has exceptionally deep pockets.

Apple is arguably the most culturally influential company in the world.

You have the resources and clout to make a difference. People respect your brand. And you have an ethical responsibility to your customers. Apple has an opportunity to change the world yet again for the better.

Let’s acknowledge the obvious. It’s better for Apple to downplay the dangers of communication-frequency radiation. But the truth never stays hidden forever. As with other environmental hazards, awareness grows and the public will demand changes. There’s usually high visibility collateral damage and costly, brand-damaging litigation. The lawsuits are already underway.

Some analysts say that Apple is becoming more corporate and less inspiring. We’re reading stories about corporate greed that don’t sit well with many. You can keep cranking out devices, like Bigweld Corporation in the animated sci fi movie Robots, or you can return to your roots and reconnect with your customers in a way that honors the sacred contract with those who trust you to do right by them.

What are some things Apple can do?

Please assert your rightful leadership role and take this issue seriously.

Remember what happened when the city of San Francisco attempted to require retailers to display radiation exposure for each type of device? Your trade association, the CTIA, slapped SF with a lawsuit and got the cellphone radiation warning law killed.

That’s an awful lot like Monsanto trying to kill GMO-labeling. Don’t go there. Monsanto is one of the most reviled corporations on the planet. When more research comes out and the evidence base undeniably matches up with the growing realization that our beloved devices are harming us, it will gravely taint your brand and your legacy.

And tell the U.S. government to grow up and do its job properly.

The FCC oversees manufacturers’ testing to ensure safe radiation levels before cell phones can be sold. This federal agency allows manufacturers to “cheat” on this test by holding cell phones up to 1 inch away from the testing device. Radiation levels thus appear much lower, enabling manufacturers to pass the test. And even so, iPhone 6 Plus is a mere .01 under the FCC’s legal limit of 1.6 watts per kilogram.

This isn’t right and it’s beneath your brand. Make safer devices and test them in the manner in which they are used – pressed on the ear, directly against the body in pockets, and tucked into waistbands and bras.

We know that Steve Jobs rejected the Tawkon radiation exposure app that measures smartphone radiation exposure. But approve it anyway or something like it. I’d like to think that Jobs would’ve changed his mind had he survived the cancer that killed him. Regardless, it’s the right thing to do.

Support the excellent work done by the BioInitiative Working Group. Contribute to safety research you don’t control and make clear that your funding isn’t contingent upon the results. Epidemiologist Devra Davis, PhD recommends a national survey of radio frequency radiation exposure and the monitoring of heavy cell phone users by granting qualified researchers access to cell phone billing records.

  • Devote a chunk of your prodigious R&D budget to the next generation of safer devices. We think we want thinner and faster, but meet the need that most of us don’t yet know we have. Make safety job #1.
  • Add unequivocal warning labels to your products and educational information on your site. Display the SAR (specific absorption rate) of each device.
  • Make it easy to turn antennae off and keep them off. Most people do not know, for example, that iPad antennae can be re-enabled while remaining in airplane mode.
  • Allow users to place calls and use features without 3G/4G when they’re not accessing the internet.
  • Package your phones with specially-designed, non-Bluetooth earpieces and highlight how to use the built-in speakerphone feature.
  • Offer Ethernet adapters for your devices. Please?

You recently joined the club of $1+ billion advertisers. Please advertise responsibly. Don’t target children and discourage the use of wireless devices in schools. The World Health Organization and the Council of Europe are in agreement. The French government implemented a cell phone ban in primary schools; students under 14 are not permitted to have (or use) a mobile phone in school.

Train your salesforce to discuss with parents and educators the product safety features, overuse risks, and proactive ways to reduce exposure. Teach users where to place routers, how to deactivate the sources of radiation when not needed, and encourage wired connections.

Be great and surprise us

I matriculated at Stanford University one year after you introduced the Macintosh. Apple embodied a renegade spirit that thumbed its nose at convention and thrilled us all. We were cheering for you. In his Commencement Speech to Stanford’s Class of 2005, Steve Jobs spoke of the “lightness of being a beginner again,” which freed him to be creative. It’s time to reinvent your company. Our leaders in the next generation, including a future Apple CEO, are kids today. Help to keep them and all children safe.

We want to cheer for Apple again.

Respectfully yours,

Louise Kuo Habakus

  • Amie Butchko

Wow. What a great and thought provoking article that all parents should read. We are just not aware of our environment today, and the environment our children are being raised in.

  • Alison

I hope you sent a copy via registered mail to Tim Cook, so he can’t ever pretend that your excellent points have not been brought to his attention.

  • Nicole

This is why we still believe in ethernet cords for our computers. We have Wifi if a guest comes to visit the house, but you don’t have to keep your Wifi turned on. Also, we have non-wireless landline phones with the old-fashioned curly cords. They still sell them at Radio Shack. If you have them in all the rooms you spend time in, you won’t miss your wireless phone, and plug-in phones never need recharging. I only use my cel when I’m away from home. This also reduces EMF exposure. Try to reduce all of your wireless exposure.

  • Joann

This article was enlightening and frightening, as I have 4 children with apple iphones, a husband who uses a Bluetooth earpiece, and myself, holding the phone as much as I can on my person, because I’m a constant user. Apple, your products are respected, please listen for the safety of our precious children, if for no other reason! To think that I am contributing to my children’s potential cancer risk is a sickening thought…we know you can make this change, God willing you won’t sell your soul to the devil!

    • Concerned Parent

Dear Joann, I agree with you 100%. It is always the responsibility of the owner to ensure safety with their products. We are all in danger, especially our children. I pray that you take heed and protect those who ARE your consumers and keep Apple in business.

  • Pamela Herring

Amen. A well articulated letter to a company that I have admired for decades and about which I have the same concerns. Thank you, Louise.- from me, my pediatric patients, my 8 grandchildren, and all – whom I want to see protected!!!

  • Sonia Story

    Greetings Louise,

Thank you for speaking out about this issue.

The ultimate power to change this situation for children is for parents to undo their own addictions to their devices and then REFUSE to purchase addicting and harmful products for their children.

Through simple neurodevelopmental movement checks, we can see there are virtually no children in modern society now whose neuro-sensory-motor foundation is not compromised. Why? Many health care providers and researchers point to damaging electro-magnetic frequencies that children are exposed to from the womb on as one of the biggest factors.

I suggest as parents we take the responsibility to change and do not rely on the ones who are running the corporations to change first.

    Sonia Story

    • Louise Habakus

      Hi, Sonia.

I agree completely. My next WiFi post (coming next week) is for parents. It is absolutely our responsibility to do the research, figure out what’s best, set limits, and make changes.

We Americans have a tendency to be supremely individualistic… to the point where we sometimes don’t demand good corporate citizenship as much as we should. Yes, we can vote with our $. It’s our best (and only true) lever to effect change. But we should also demand more and better.

Companies care about making money. The question is too often “what can we get away with?” and they seek counsel from their Legal, Compliance, and Risk Management depts. For some corporations, it’s even part of their business model to pay huge fines, even criminal penalties, as a cost of doing business, when it can make financial sense.

As long as it doesn’t impact their brand.

So that’s the question on the table. Using Apple as a proxy for the industry, because leaders also have responsibilities not just privileges, should Apple’s brand be impacted if it fails to take a pro-consumer position on issues such as radiation labeling, product features, and children’s health?

They will say it’s not their problem; the FCC gave them the green light. And then we need to decide if we are comforted by our govt agencies in the role of watchdog. FCC, FDA, EPA, CDC. How’s that working out for us exactly?

So, I, like many parents, would never ask that corporations change first. We know we’re on the front lines and when it comes to our children’s health, it’s up to us. But it shouldn’t stop us for calling them out on it.

Good letter. I wonder if anyone from Apple will respond?

Since publishing a review of the research on mobile phone use and tumor risk in 2009 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, I have been studying wireless radiation risks and trying to educate journalists and policy makers.

More than a hundred experts are concerned about the health risks from exposure to low intensity wireless radiation.

In 2013, I launched an Electromagnetic Radiation Safety website (http://www.saferemr.com) which provides links to press releases, news stories, radio interviews, and a new award-winning documentary film, “Mobilize: A Film about Cell Phone Radiation.”

    • Wilma Miles

Thank you Dr Moskowitz for all your hard work -and for not being influenced by industry. We are very grateful for everything you are doing.

    • Yifan

Thanks for your work. Can you get the teachers’ unions nationwide on board to ban WiFi in school, or start with WiFi-Free (EMR-Free) Zone movement as the smoke-free room? Teachers may be the ones who are hurt the most. A lot of routers are installed in proximity to teachers who stay there all day and every year, while students move to different classes and graduate from school.

Since his middle school started the free iPad program, my child started vomiting, had headaches, loss of sleep, etc. I seriously believe he could’ve died had I not pulled him out of that school. I sent medical research and information on the dangers of WiFi from wifiinschools.com to our school district and board, but they said they do not understand and added that every school is doing it. All my children skipped middle school to escape from iPads but they still face WiFi routers everywhere. We need to save a generation of DNA damaged children (with lower IQs).

    • Louise Habakus

I am a big fan of your work, Joel! I will add your website to our list of resources in next week’s post. Welcome ideas for collaboration, too. Perhaps we could co-produce a radio show and invite some experts to join us. I’m in touch with Kevin about Mobilize (it’s great). Apple is watching to see whether the outrage will impact their brand/sales. The ball is in our court.

  • Susie M

Thank you for bravely taking a stand!

  • daliya Robson

    Dear Apple people.
There are a few solutions out there that can be built somehow into or over or around the unit the kids are using or even adults. I know of the one on set of systems as its on my own web site and/but there are a few other things out there that neutralize the way we receive the vibes of the emf and wireless. see this page and research the internet for other solutions ton integrate into your systems. http://nontoxic.com/electromagnetic/electromagnetic.htm
Perhaps use the technology to build a casing around the phones and computers to neutralize the negative effects. I would not be able to use phones computers or tv without these. daliya@nontoxic.com

  • Jacob

Wow !! Straight out of my 60 Springs young heart ! As a 30 year + partner of a severely Electro Hyper Sensitive partner and as a long time Apple user ( since 2001 ) I fully support this letter. There are better technologies as WiFi : LED light data transmission for instance which transmits at higher speeds as WiFi ever can. Sure Apple geniuses could bring this to the market faster as their marketing crooks would love to do ( first drain every penny out of old technology ) but humanity and Apples loyal customers deserve better , safer.

  • Tanja

Thanks for the making of this fine letter, your good ideas for Apple on how to become a decent and health-friendly brand.

  • Wilma Miles

Well done – excellent article – most people are blissfully unaware of the dangers of wi-fi. Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room. Most people are totally unaware of this issue. We are trying our best to raise awareness about the issue in South Africa. We are eagerly waiting on ICNIRP to change the safety level. Unfortunately the telecom industry is very powerful. Researchers that indicate possible harm are fired, lose grants and funding, and are even ousted by industry-funded colleagues.

Big money is being donated for free wi-fi. Are donors aware of the dangers or are they ignoring it? I challenge them to donate the same amount to Professors Olle Johansson and Darius Lesczynski to continue their research. What happened to informed consent-what about parents who do not know the dangers of wi-fi? Sign this petition asking Messrs Ceccatelli, Ingvardsson, and Garmager at Karolinska Institute, Sweden to let Dr. Johansson continue his crucial work. The industry does not like him. Why I wonder are they scared of his research? He has even received death threats. secure.avaaz.org

  • Melissa Chalmers

    Dear Louise,

What a wonderful letter! We posted it on our Wendy Walks for ES facebook page right away.

I wish Apple would make it so that you could plug an ethernet cable into the IPad and all their products so they can be used wired. There is a rapidly growing segment of the population that has been overexposed to radiation and can no longer tolerate any wireless. This option would help these individuals as well as give everyone the option to lower their own wireless exposure. Children, who are at a higher risk, are using these tablets at school now with no option to have the devices wired. Just this one change would do so much good.

Thank you again and all the best,

    • Louise Habakus

Yes, ethernet cables for iPads. I’m so with you, Melissa. Apple needs to know WE DON’T CARE THAT CABLES ARE NOT ELEGANT. Millions of our toddlers and kids sitting with these iPads for hours a day, at home and at school, over weeks, months, years… it’s overwhelming to consider the price we’ll all be paying for this cumulative radiation exposure .

  • Michele Gelman

Thank you for this letter. It is terrifying that with the Common Core Curriculum children are exposed to high levels of microwave radiation all day long without consent or the opportunity to decline.

Our whole family became very sick from wireless radiation with wide ranging symptoms over a few years. By the time we finally pinpointed the cause we were so electrically sensitive that we now feel sick when we are near phones or wifi or cell masts. This is incredibly difficult to live with. More and more people are becoming electrically hypersensitive but in the meantime they will get sick and will only treat the symptoms.

Consider this: there are 600,000 new cases of ADHD diagnosed every year, autism is doubling every 5 years, Alzheimers has gone up 600% since the 1980s (especially early onset), fertility rates are plummeting for both men and women, brain cancer and leukemia are the top killers of children (you are 5-8 times more likely to get brain cancer if you start using a cell phone before the age of 20), and autoimmune disease is one of the top 10 leading causes of death in female children and women in all age groups up to 64 years of age.

All of these conditions have been linked in independent scientific studies to the huge increase in radio frequency radiation in our environment.

And yet school boards continually refuse to take the precautionary approach and cities are becoming wi-fi zones. Cable companies no longer have modems that don’t produce wifi and new televisions all emit – as do Apple tv devices.

Tobacco and asbestos pale in comparison to this health crisis but the huge sums of money at stake and the addictive nature of the devices is going to make this a long and difficult battle.

Thank you for taking a stand.

    Michele Gelman

  • Beth Sturdivant

Great Article!!! I am an adult who was severely damaged by radiation from these gadgets and high tension power lines. I am still recovering after 6 years now. This is no fun when you reach my point of exposure. This is my passion to help educate parents on the dangers of these devices. The book I wrote, Backyard Secret Exposed, will help further bring awareness through my journey of surviving this ordeal.

    • Michele Gelman

Hi Beth. I read your book and empathized my way through it! I am curious if your family also became ill and how everyone is doing now.

  • Betty Kotevski

Tremendous article. I am in Melbourne, Australia and the issues are the same. Appealing to Apple’s morals….well. Companies don’t have morals but companies are only made up of individuals who should. Similarly, governments are only collections of individuals who should care and exercise more caution but don’t. How do parents take on deep-pocketed bureaucrats who seem to be “no care and no responsibility” about the issue of industrial-strength Wi-Fi in schools, without resorting to legal action which is prohibitively expensive, and which is technically difficult due to lax industry-influenced RF protection standards? School principals themselves have been co-opted by these devices in their attempts to be the most dazzling tech-savvy schools in their region. This seems to appeal to parents who are similarly bedazzled by their own devices and have fears that their children will fall behind.

As parents, we should all actively point the finger (in writing) at our own schools, school councils and departments of education, reminding them that they will be held personally (directors/officers’ duties) and collectively responsible (duty of care), because occupational health and safety goes beyond ‘the emissions were within the maximum limits of the RF standard.’ No proof of harm is not proof of safety – and there is proof of harm, particularly for sensitive individuals.

Unfortunately, it’s only when lawyers get involved that change happens – because it’s forced to.

  • Joe Imbriano

The threat to our children is grave and we must act now to protect them. Remove the wireless from the schools or remove your children from the schools. The iPad deployment in the laps of our children is a direct attack on our children’s fertility. The time to act is now. This is worse than a horror movie because this is real. More information here.

  • Sandra Storwick

    Great letter! Thank you!
Do you mind if I post it on my blog?

  • Julienne Battalia

WOW how can we send this letter as a group.. as a petition?

    • Louise Habakus

Hi, Julienne. I thought about it, but I think we first need to show that enough people care about this issue. If we get enough traffic, comments, and likes, I think a petition could be a great follow up idea. The biggest challenge is education/awareness. No one wants to hear this because people are addicted to their devices.

  • Linda

Thankyou for writing this letter. You are so articulate and make it plain and simple for everyone to understand. Let’s hope they listen, because they sure need to!

  • Stephanie Dietz

MUCH RESPECT to the writer of this letter (and this awesome group of FEARLESS parents)! I shared this post w/ our group of activists. We are parents and concerned citizens fighting against the ignorance surrounding Electro-Magnectic Fields created by wifi, smart meters etc. I was a parents looking for solutions for my energy sensitive child in school when we discovered that the Russians and others worldwide were using a mineral called “SHUNGITE” to protect against these fields, we begun our investigations into it. What we discovered was of such profound significance, we worked to find vendors who could supply us w/ SHUNGITE and develop products that could be easily used. Our mission is to get “Shungite to the masses!” (and into EVERY school!) Please check out our resources and products and learn how Shungite is the Solution. Much love <3

As a parent of two who has researched this subject extensively, particularly with respect to radio frequency radiation exposure in school environments, I share your concerns and appreciate greatly your informed and eloquent voice on the subject. I look forward with enthusiasm to your second post about wireless radiation, ” . . . for parents who are figuring out how to protect our children.”

Grazie to macitynet.it for reporting on our open letter to Apple in an article to concerned parents in Italy. i miei figli sono un quarto italiano!

  • Lydia Alexander

Louise, thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! I have been researching EMFs and their effects thanks to some friends on here pointing me in that direction. After cutting out a lot of screen time both of my sons have stopped ticking almost completely. I’d say a 90%+ reduction. They used to tick almost every time they spoke. When they do play on a phone of ours (I returned our iPad it made them tic so much) I put them in airplane mode.
Anyways. Thank you for bringing attention to this!

  • Jill Donely Rege

The whole Bay Area. Google has covered Mountain View in free wifi.

  • Julie Bamonte Burgo

Loved this! Excellent!!!!!!! My daughter in fifth grade carries a chromebook around with her all day at school (they have wifi). Some homework and learning activities are also done at home which add to more screen time. Also, computers are slow so it adds even more screen time and more unnecessary and unhealthy exposure.

  • Joe Kelly

Did similar letters go to all manufacturers of wi-fi devices or is Apple being singled out? More concern should be on what is put in our food that destroys our health, such as high fructose corn syrup that is in everything, than our electronic devices. Although close monitoring is justified to maintain safe levels of EMF.

    • Louise Habakus

Hey, Joe. I did not want to believe this either. No one wants to go here. It does it make our lives easier.

Apple is a proxy for the industry, which resists radiation labeling (a la Monsanto), hides its radio frequency radiation warnings in microscopic font in its user guides (along with Nintendo, Sony Playstation, all the Bluetooth devices and more), and conducts safety testing by holding devices 15mm from the ear (otherwise they wouldn’t pass muster).

The purpose of this letter is to raise awareness and engage us all in a conversation about choices and responsibilities. It doesn’t absolve any of us from getting educated and parenting our children. But we deserve better from our corporations and should demand it. My second article, addressed to parents, is coming this week.

I’m totally with you about what’s being put in our food. But it’s easier to get our heads wrapped around things that we can touch, see, and taste. Food, drugs, telecom… industries engage in practices that make it difficult for us to get a good handle on risks.

I’d love for you to read the entire letter and check out the peer-reviewed science backing up the concerns.

Louise, Thank you for writing that letter. I do hope you’ll get an answer! I am very concerned about how much time my grandson spends on “screen time.” I have purchased Earthing pads in my constant search for improved health and decreased knee pain. I really appreciated your great references. Also, thank you for the much needed attention to using caution with vaccines for children!

Los Angeles Unified School District Accommodates Teacher Who Fell Ill After Wireless Installation [PRLog 10/10/14]

    From the release:

Students were bleeding from the ears and nose and no incident reports were allowed by the school states the teacher who required medical intervention.

On September 18, 2014, LAUSD, the second largest public school district in the US, officially accommodated teacher Ms. Anura Lawson by approving her request to have the Wi-Fi turned off in her classroom during the 2014-2015 school year and alternatively approving a reassignment to a different school site where Wi-Fi has yet to be installed.

The Middle School teacher reported that she fell seriously ill after a wireless system upgrade in her school in Spring 2014. She described her cardiac symptoms during a May 28, LAUSD Common Core Tech Project meeting. Ms. Lawson also stated, “The students are having nosebleeds and the main offices are refusing to do incident reports. I have had two seventh grade students bleeding out of their ears.” See video testimony.

This is the first accommodation in a US public school system for microwave sickness.

Fantastic letter, I hope you receive a response.

I have worked with this issue over 13 years since developing breast cancer in my 30’s and discovering the cancer cluster surrounding a T-Mobile cell tower/phone mast in our tiny hamlet in Wishaw, UK. You can download the Wishaw cancer cluster story and some of my presentations and our work via the following link: http://www.radiationresearch.org/aboutus/eileen-o-connor-director-for-rrt-presentations-and-talks

Keep up the good work and continue creating awareness.

There is a simple hardware solution so the iPad can be used on the internet without wifi/Bluetooth, using a standard Ethernet plug in. The wifi and bluetooth are first turned off on the iPad. Works on iPads up to iPad Air. I have not checked the newest iPad. The connection is actually faster than a wifi connection.

The older iPads will also work but they need different adapters. There are several youtubes on this.

The 1st iPad is radioactive and emits beta electron particles as detected with a good Geiger counter. iPad2 and Air are not radioactive. The amount of radiation was not dangerous, but it was 2X more than background and easy to measure.

I’m a retired staff scientist from Motorola. I have no wifi, or cordless phones, or any other Rf devices in my home. I also have several RF meters. When we get visitors, my RF signals go up due to cell phones, iPhones, etc., even when they are charging. I tell visitors to turn off their devices.

There is no simple solution to the problem that this hole wireless circus is killing bees and birds and probably many other species.

The simple solution when it comes to kids would be to make a law against it: no smoking, no drinking, and no wireless tech for kids.

For me there’s no easy solutions, I have had microwave illness for 20 years, since my boyfriend at the time had his first “phonebox”– a big brick Motorola — that sent electric shocks through my brain, then started to interfere with the TV or radiosignal. If these early Motorola phones used a stronger signal or what, I don’t know?

I live in a normal Danish house, with neigbours on all sides and they all got phones, wifi, “smartmeters,” and these things. I have no RF devices. I have given my walls graphite paint aso, still 6 wireless networks from neighbours can be found in my kitchen.

I get microwaved inside my own home or wherever I go.

Electrosmog feels like tiny pins and needles sticking into all of the cells of my body. If other people can’t feel it, they’ve already experienced Neurological damage in the form of disabled (or just plain under-developed) neurons and axons!

I wish building better devices and teaching the public how to use them more wisely would fix the entire problem, but it won’t because it’s everywhere. The fluorescent lights are vibrating/resonating at around the same rates as the ipads, etc. They have mercury in them – vibrating in them – and into us – which then adversely interacts with testosterone – that then kills off brain cells.

Btw, I have another friend who unplugged and cured Autism, too. Funny, we were already connected yet had never discussed our mutual cure – until last night. I wonder how many of us are actually out there who know and/or have done the same! Here’s a working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research: Does Television Cause Autism?

Great letter, Louise. I have known about this issue for quite a while and have been active on it and other environmental issues. Thanks to all of the commentaters for sharing so much great info. Let’s hope we can get somewhere with this. I suppose we can just unplug and move some place where they have not yet gone wireless (if such a place exists). Praying that the world will wake up to the craziness and move toward sanity, though I have Mich doubt that will happen. Onward Louise et al. XXOO

Your open letter to the folks at Apple is a masterpiece. It represents what I’ve been telling folks about for years. Thank you for the courage to speak your mind on behalf of children and adults who are ‘fascinated’ but also addicted to technology. I admire what you do.

  • Sylvia Fogel M.D.

Louise, thanks for this fabulous and much-needed piece. The ubiquitous nature of wireless devices leads us all to the false assumption that these technologies are safe. The data are clear. High frequency radiation is a health hazard. We must acknowledge the healthcare risks to ourselves and our families. And educate those among us who assume that our government regulatory agencies are advocating for safety. Finally, we must, at the very least, take personal action and responsibility for the use of these technologies in our homes and schools. Science cannot always influence public policy, especially when there are financial interests at stake. But we can take steps to protect ourselves. Again, thank you for the important piece. You have amassed a wealth of data.

BioInitiative stuff isn’t peer reviewed and it’s not even science,

    • Sylvia Fogel M.D.

Mark, The bioinitiative reports are based on hundreds of peer reviewed studies, compiled by established research scientists. I welcome additional clarification from you about which “stuff” is not “science”. Below, I provide you with some results from a 2 second pubmed search. I am assuming that data such as these would fall under most people’s definition of “science”. And perhaps even “stuff”. The “science stuff” presented herein is in no way comprehensive or exhaustive. I got tired of cutting and pasting. 1. Neuronal cellular responses to extremely low frequency electromagnetic field exposure: implications regarding oxidative stress and neurodegeneration. Dear Mark, maybe you should understand that peer-review does not mean very much these days.Could you provide me with one independent study that shows that cellphones are safe?Appreciated.

Independent Summary of Research on EMF and RFR: The BioInitiative Work is Published in Peer-reviewed Journals

An in-depth overview of the BioInitiative 2007 science and public health policy implications of EMF/RFR (wireless) was published in 2009 in various chapters by the same BioInitiative authors in a special issue of Pathophysiology (2009). The two-volume issue documented biological effects and adverse health impacts of EMFs – genotoxicity, neurotoxicity, reproductive and developmental effects, physiological stress, blood-brain barrier effects, immune system effects, various cancers including breast cancer, glioma and acoustic neuroma, Alzheimer’s disease; and the science as a guide to what preventive measures are warranted.

The BioInitiative 2007 Report documented serious health impacts from EMF and wireless radiofrequency radiation in a compendium of the science based on over 2,000 published, peer-reviewed studies from 1979 through 2006. The BioInitiative 2012 Report (the five-year update) added another 1,800+ peer-reviewed studies published between 2006 and 2012; and 29 expert researchers from ten countries reported their findings in a new 1,400-page report available at Bioinitiative.org. These two reports conclude that precautionary health actions are warranted now, that new biologically-based public exposure standards are critically needed. Further, the new safety limits must be keyed to the levels reported to cause health harm are many thousands of times lower than current FCC and ICNIRP safety limits.

The hazards of chronic exposure to wireless RF are also documented in the two-volume Non-Thermal Effects and Mechanisms of Interaction between Electromagnetic Fields and Living Matter eds Giuliani L and Soffritti, M, ICEMS, Ramazzini Institute, Bologna, Italy (2010); the World Health Organization INTERPHONE Final Report (2010); and the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer RFR Monograph (Baan et al, 2011) designating RFR as a Group 2B Possible Human Carcinogen.

Overall, these provide support for warnings and advice to consumers and the public that the body of evidence for biological from daily exposure levels of ELF and RFR can reasonably be presumed to results in adverse health impacts with chronic exposure. The studies on which these warnings rely establish that biological effects from exposure to EMF/RFR are established, not speculative or weak. Further, they document that existing ICNIRP and FCC public safety limits are inadequate to protect public health with respect to emerging wireless technologies.

The BioInitiative Working Group (May, 2013)

The BioInitiative 2012 Report has been prepared by 29 authors from ten countries, ten holding medical degrees (MDs), 21 PhDs, and three MsC, MA or MPHs. Among the authors are three former Presidents of the Bioelectromagnetics Society and five full members of BEMS.

  • Cindy Sage, MA, Co-Editor, BioInitiative Reports

Congrats, Louise for your letter to Apple. On Sept 22nd, the BioInitiative Working Group send a similar letter to 45 American CEOs, CFOs, CTOs and others to warn against wireless in classrooms. These corporations are aggressively pushing a corporate agenda that urges wireless educational technologies, and wireless classrooms in every school in America. See the BioInitiative letter that issues a strong warning against this initiative.

We are urging them to help INNOVATE by choosing to develop and market WIRED solutions for internet connectivity for school children. Let’s all be working together to make the most out of new educational technologies that can TEACH WITHOUT HARM. Same goes for protecting school teachers and staff from the harmful effects of chronic exposure to pulsed radiofrequency radiation (i.e., wireless routers, wireless classrooms, wireless devices in schools).

  • Eileen O'Connor

The clock has now started ticking on liability and the letter directed to Cupertino should serve as official legal notice.

These products are a potential risk for our children’s health and us all at risk and should be heavily regulated. The new British iphone advert insinuates that the iphone is healthy for you when promoting the healthy app. These comments are reckless and misleading and need to be addressed and as a matter of urgency.

The BioInitiative Working Group have reviewed 1000’s of peer reviewed scientific papers: http://www.bioinitiative.org. This group of researchers highlights the fact that Bioeffects are clearly established to occur with very low exposure levels of (non-thermal levels) to electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation exposures. The report calls for the precautionary approach and urgent action due to chronic EMF-related diseases that are a potential risk for everyone. These diseases include adverse effects on the central nervous system, cancer initiating and promoting effects, impairments of certain brain functions, loss of memory and cognitive function and infertility and immune dysfunction.

Advice from the UK Department of health says:
“we need more research to look at the situation, particularly in the long term.
The body and nervous system are still developing into the teenage years. Therefore, as a precaution, the UK Chief Medical Officers advise that children and young people under 16 should be encouraged to use mobile phones for essential purposes only, and to keep calls short. If you are concerned, you can take steps to reduce your exposure such as using hands free kits or texting.”
    Download here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/215711/dh_124899.pdf

The World Health Organisation’s public health advice states “IARC has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), a category used when a causal association is considered credible.” The IARC — the World Health Organization’s cancer committee scientists almost unanimously voted for the 2B “possible carcinogen to humans” this classification is for the entire RF – EMF Spectrum and therefore firmly falls into the proper application of the Precautionary Principle as defined in various European Commission documents. It is therefore not ethical or acceptable to promote or offer claims of safety for risky technology to the public.

The Hardell Group of researchers have since published five ground breaking studies in 2013. The Hardell studies are the first to correlate mobile phone usage with incidences of brain tumours over a 20+year period of time, longer than any other epidemiological studies. They found a clear correlation between cell phone usage and two types of brain tumours, acoustic neuromas and the deadliest of all brain cancers, gliomas.

In addition the Italian court considered Hardell’s studies more reliable and independent than the Interphone study which had been part funded by the mobile phone industry. The Italian Supreme Court judge has awarded compensation towards a plaintiff who developed a neuroma brain tumour caused by his heavy mobile phone use.

Hardell himself is calling for RF to be classified a Group 1 carcinogen. The Hardell group used the Bradford Hill framework for evaluation on brain tumour risk from RF/EMF. Based on Hill’s viewpoints and his discussion on how these issues should be used, glioma and acoustic neuroma are caused by RF-EMF emissions from wireless phones. According to the IARC Preamble (54), the classification should be group 1, i.e., “the agent is carcinogenic to humans”, and urgent revision of current guidelines for exposure is needed.”

Recently, the insurance industry sounded the warning bells as specialists from the Emerging Risks team at the global insurance company Swiss Re Sonar highlighted the implications for human health, in its 2013 Emerging Risks report. The report clearly state potential impacts are rated as high and likely to hit the casualty area of insurance business over the next decade. In particular with regard to the use of mobile phones, power lines or antennas for broadcasting.
Furthermore, in accordance with provisions of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, there was a very telling revelation by a telecommunications company dated December 21, 2011, and you will find this to be true among similar reports in the telecom world. The report includes the following statement from VERIZON:
“Our wireless business also faces personal injury and consumer class action lawsuits relating to alleged health effects of wireless phones or radio frequency transmitters, and class action lawsuits that challenge marketing practices and disclosures relating to alleged adverse health effects of handheld wireless phones. We may incur significant expenses in defending these lawsuits. In addition, we may be required to pay significant awards or settlements.” Download more details here: http://www.radiationresearch.org/images/rrt_articles/Business.pdf

This is a global issue with unparalleled amounts of money and power from industry. The US President’s Cancer Panel reported that “the true burden of environmentally induced cancers has been grossly underestimated” and strongly urged action to reduce people’s widespread exposure to carcinogens.
The president’s Cancer Panel 2008 – 2009 Report offers policy, research and program recommendations to responsible agencies, stakeholders, and other entities following the review from all stakeholders. The Report states: “methods for long-term monitoring and quantification of electromagnetic energy exposures related to cell phones and wireless technologies are urgently needed given the escalating use of these devices by larger and younger segments of the population and the higher radiofrequencies newer devices produce.”

I wonder how companies such as Apple will be remembered in history!

  • ShameOnApple!

That was truly an excellently written letter. I see you put Tim Cook’s email addy at the top, so I’m guessing you also emailed him a copy. And you are absolutely correct to target Apple first & foremost. As if they do Not know the dangers, pfff!

You should invite Tim Cook on your radio show to:
    –Answer your letter over the air, point by point;
    –If he refuses, read the letter yourself to your radio audience & then post the video/audio of the verbal letter all over the web, & send Tim a copy of that, too;
–Invite Tim on for a one-on-one debate with Barrie Trower, formerly-retired British military microwave weapons expert, who came out of retirement when he heard they were putting microwave weapons in schools (WiFi); since then he has traveled to 27+ countries in his elderly years warning humanity that the health of nations will be laid waste by this MWR & other EMR/RF technology; & he has received death threats, too.

Ask Tim how tightly knit Apple is with the Military Industrial Complex that President Eisenhauer warned about before leaving office (see YouTube for his speech). Military provides the Weapons (MWR aka Wireless; RFs & LFs/SmartGrid, etc.) to Industry (Apple, Utility Companies, etc.) & all together they build a Complex to destroy humanity & let us pay big $$ for our own demise while they get richer & richer. A “Brilliantly” Evil way to generate “population reduction.”

Allen H. Frey proved back in the 1960’s that pulsed MWR was deadly: he could alter the behavior of lab animals with extremely low doses & could stop the hearts of frogs by timing the pulses against the heart beat. Besides the neurological & CNS damage from MWR, cardiac interference is a biggie & at 10,000 x more in today’s gadgets than levels Frey used! The US Navy & Army funded Frey’s research for the subsequent 20 years. YES THEY ALL KNOW! Does Tim Cook not have copies of all the reports over the decades? What’s his excuse? Man Up there, Tim, & come clean!

And if radiating handheld gadgets aren’t enough, they have now piped the same Weapons through the UNSHIELDED Power Grid worldwide. If you have not been vibrated & drone-hummed to death via RF/MWR, EMR, & Infrasound/LF from power lines, your wall-wiring, your Smart Meter, cell towers, etc., just wait! It may already be happening in your environment but you may not hear it/feel it (not everyone can hear Low Frequencies, but in this case it’s a blessing > early warning signal!) See World Hum Map Database & Research site & blog; plus all letters/reports by Victor Nixon, M.Sc. & former Special Services military veteran & SCADA electrical expert, for starters. (Nixon dead from “heart attack” age 59, Sept. 2012, less than a month after challenging the DOJ for violating his civil rights by “radiating him without his permission via the Smart Grid”). You can add former-child prodigy Eric P. Dollard after that who worked for RCA, video at YT dated 9/29/14, interview, Power Grid info near end at 1:15-hr thru 1:28-hr.

    Back to Apple:

    1. More evil that Apple does, you mentioned one > putting too many antennas in the gadgets. Remove the wifi, bluetooth, & the new NFC antennas, & whatever other antennas there are. Leave only one for Edge 🙂 which is what I use on an “old” 3Gs, the lowest SAR iPhone Apple has made, sturdy & hard plastic which is better >>>

    2. I won’t buy their new stuff, besides the outrageous prices & too many antennas, they also keep making them out of METALS which magnifies the MWR/RF radiation & vibrations. With metal on the back & sides, it will push more radiation forward, toward the person’s head/body using it vs. letting it go out the back side. Doesn’t Apple have any common sense or are they just evil?

    3. Build in an AMBER coating/screen-option & let the Brightness Slider go DOWN further! I keep the Brightness as Low as the Slider will go AND keep an Amber film over the screen to lessen the harsh “blue light” > see LowBlueLights.com re bright “white” (it’s really blue) light, the eyes, the pineal gland, & melatonin suppression ( > ruins sleep, no longer inhibits cancer, adds to obesity, etc.). Another Evil they did with iOS.7, blind & suppress the pineal gland with that horrid bright white iOS “upgrade” (not me!)

    4. The other main thing you mentioned & I agree 100% > Build WIRED/Ethernet handheld “internet/email/text” gadgets (can even leave out the “phone” part for all I care, lol). Put a dongle port on it for Ethernet. And keep the body carbonite, no metal casings! The first company to start doing this will turn the tide.

  • ShameOnApple!

I had to come back & add something I only learned earlier this very day! The joke is on us, I guess. Who knew that the SAR tests are performed on non-human PLASTIC-Headed Dummies? (since you requested in your Tim Cook letter that Apple put SAR ratings on all devices, I thought you might appreciate this if you were not already aware of it):

The FCC or Health Canada, Utility, or Meter Manufacturer … get to substantiate the plastic head used for the Specific Absorption Rate. There are other SAR test devices and they all use the same biological sciences displayed in the picture below. How can there be health effects? The plastic head has no health.

All cellphone manufacturers have to submit their phones for testing. The red arrow highlights the base of the antenna where a localized area of the skull is thought to be heated. The white arrow highlights the temperature probe in the hole in the test model’s head where liquid is poured.

The same test is adopted for Wi-Fi and Smart Meters … 24/7 exposure has been deemed safe because the laptop and meter are not held against the head like a cell phone. They left out the antennas, routers, and smart grid.

When it is reported there are no peer reviewed studies showing harm, you can see why. This test dummy doesn’t have any biological information, it is all based on whether water molecules heat, and ridiculous baseless science.
Remember, the SAR left out the grid, that should have set off alarm bells.

Great letter! What do you think of making a version that we all sign on to and send in?

    • Louise Habakus

Thanks, Danielle. My hope was that many people would email Tim Cook directly. We originally thought about making this post into a petition… we could still do that if there’s interest!

    Bless You Louise.

The answer is simple parents.. NO!

    NO to kids

    NO to the school

    NO to Apple

Remember it is your RIGHT to PROTECT YOUR FAMILY… pick up any radiating devices that can harm you, your children or loved ones and return them with a demand for a refund to place of purchase due to radiation emissions. And please complete with a letter of disgust at the production and deceptive selling tactics without disclosure of the radiating device. Besides the radiation dangers, they are destructive to family and the soul.

And just as retired Motorola Employee has done remove any RF devices from your home…no SMART fridge, SMART TV, SMART ANYTHING…. RFR = Class 1 Carcinogen as Hartdell says. And use a meter to check visitors .

Get your family back and get them to retrieve their brains from these addictive devices. Severely EHS and “off the charts ” heavy metals I can “feel ” the power of these smart phones …..they are deadly.

Also our kids need our attention, teenagers need mentors …people who care….we have been sold a whole lot of alot of NOTHING.

    Time to BE community.

Did you know that iPads and iPhones can emit dangerous levels of radiation…especially for babies & children? While I know this wonderful open letter by Louise Kuo Habakus is a couple months old, I just read it for the first time this morning and felt compelled to share…1) because I would really like to see Apple step up and do the right thing (without cheating on radiation results) and, 2) because I know many toddlers & children will be receiving techie Christmas gifts in less than two weeks.

Be aware parents. Our children’s health and well-being has to do with *everything* in our home environment – not just taking our kids in for every recommended “well baby” visit and providing meals based on an [outdated and arguably unhealthy] “food pyramid” – both provided by and relentlessly marketed by our often mis-guided government (whose regulations and guidelines are sorely lacking and too frequently tied to lobbyists and back-door deals that have nothing to do with health, but everything to do with money). There is SO MUCH MORE to good health, and toxic assaults found in most American homes are something I step on a soap box about several times a year…

How many parents do you know who realize that their baby/toddler is exposed to radical amounts of radiation via iPads and iPhones? While I know this may not be the typical, happy, popular, Christmas-y kind of post for this time of year, I think it is important and I hope it will make at least one parent of a child with a still-developing body/brain stop and consider this important topic.

    Please repost and help educate.

    • Caroline Parra via Facebook

i 100% agree with u. I use my cell phone way too much around my son and that is something i have to work on but I am adamant about not letting him sit and watch movies and play on my phone or ipad. They really are dangerous for children’s developing brains.

  • Sheryl

I would like to ask Apple to make it possible to connect an iPad to the internet through a cable, instead of using wifi. I know they can can make it possible, if they want to. I certainly would pay for this added feature, as would many parents who are educated about the negative health impact of wifi.

  • Candace

Thank you fearlessparent.org. It is high time parents voice their concerns over the unregulated, widespread use of devices we have no idea are safe.
