July 9, 2014 – Maya Shetreat-Klein, MD
with Kelly Brogan, MD
According to governmental statistics, 12% of children aged 3 to 17 are neurodevelopmentally impaired. Genetics cannot explain skyrocketing rates of ADHD, sensory processing problems, and autism spectrum disorders.
Child behavioral health cannot be viewed as a “head-up” phenomenon any longer. It requires intuition, cutting-edge investigative science, and a systems-based approach that looks at the whole child in her environment. Seeing children’s bodies as messengers sounding the alarm about what is out of balance, this is what a holistic pediatric practitioner is adept at.
Maya Shetreat-Klein is pioneering a gentler, more effective approach toward pediatric neurology. She stands in very sparse company at the top of a new paradigm in children’s health.
- Should we be medicating child behavioral problems?
- What is driving the epidemic of chronic pediatric illness?
- What should kids be eating for brain and body wellness?
- What are the top three supplements for supporting brain health in children?
- What are the most important diagnostics for vague psychiatric and behavioral problems?
Maya Shetreat-Klein, MD is a board-certified pediatric neurologist offering an integrative approach to neurological, behavioral and cognitive problems for those who believe that children can regain health without using medication as the first option. She uses nutrition, supplements, herbals, and mind-body, supported by medical evidence. Maya is board-certified in Adult and Pediatric Neurology and Pediatrics. She teaches integrative neurology as faculty at New York Medical College and UMDNJ, and lectures widely. She completed pediatrics residency training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and her neurology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center. Maya graduated from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she was awarded the Edward Padow Award for Excellence in Pediatrics and graduated with a Special Distinction in Research in Child Neurology for her work in Autism. She graduated from Columbia College.
Kelly Brogan, MD is Medical Director of Fearless Parent and mom of two. She is board certified in Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, and Integrative and Holistic Medicine. Holistic living, environmental medicine, and nutrition are the bedrock of her functional medicine practice. She serves as medical advisor to GreenMedInfo, Pathways to Family Wellness, and Fisher Wallace. Kelly holds degrees from MIT and Cornell Medical School.

This was such an amazing interview! Dr. Shetreat-Klein, you have a new fan.
Thanks, Maureen!
Thanks for being a healer versus just a practitioner. Putting health of children as your mission
and educating all. If only this was shared in the department of education and local school boards.
Teachers pushing parents to get ADD mess versus a nutritional plan and counseling. The poverty stricken areas of this country live on processed foods because they are cheap. The prisons would be less burdened with nutritional evaluations and food sensitivity also. Moving a standard to mainstream practices in evaluation of life nutrition every detail from pregnant mothers, to delivery, to first year health, and onwards to carry the whole history from prenatal to teen years on a single medical record might open eyes quickly.
Please Send our new president or better yet his daughter, one of your books and please mention the EPA to FDA to the RDA could help our national status with corporate farms having testing of soils and pesticides if they sell large populations for profit. Europe and Canada Brazil and China get it!
Best wishes to you both looking forward to rewiring Amercia and our diet philosophy.
