with Kelly Brogan, MD
Half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14, says the National Institute of Mental Health. Medco reports that 7% of boys and 5% of girls are using mental health medications. There’s an acknowledged epidemic of childhood mental disorders, including ADHD, bipolar disorder, and autism.
Our nation’s children are in crisis. Doctors and parents are reaching for pharmaceutical solutions at an alarming rate.
What would you think about a child psychiatrist who emphasizes a child’s inherent resilience and resources over pathology and prescriptions?
How about a doctor who believes that an innate desire for balance–a wholeness–between brain-body-mind lies at the heart of wellness?
Would you like to find a holistic psychiatrist who prefers to use the following treatment modalities over medication?
- nutrition
- supplements
- mind-body skills
- acupuncture
- deep and intuitive listening
- a shift in awareness to support the healing process

love to share thoughts on mental illness treatment and recovery with you or anyone that has experienced the terrible treatment and support for those that have mental health issues. i agree with dr. brogan and working on a creative holistic integrated with meds if needed approach with a support network that understand each person’s needs.
Will this show be taped and/or available online after the show ends
I am so impressed with Dr. Shannon’s approach to mental health. We live in a pill driven culture but trailblazers like Dr. Shannon and Dr. Brogan are making it easier for parents like myself who know there is a different way to approach mental wellness. Thank you for your wisdom!
I forgot to mention that my son has autism. What demonstrates in him as psychosis is extreme food and food additive sensitivities, as well as extreme reactions to sugar. I would never have know if I hadn’t keep strict records of his diet. There is a clear connection between what he eats and his behavior.
How refreshing, a psychiatrist who takes a history and doesn’t automatically pull out the prescription pad. Every practitioner we have gone to wants to offer psychiatric medications. The children we have seen on them still have problems and we hear of parents taking their children off medications because of undesirable side effects. Let’s get to the root causes of behavior.
Thank you for making this show available, and thanks to Drs Shannon and Brogan for working so hard to get this message out.
Hi,
I have a daughter who is struggling with depression, moodiness, and now an eating disorder. she is currently in residential treatment. I strongly believe that it’s all tied to her gut but it’ hard to convince conventional doctors of this. all they want to do is medicate her and I am refusing. I feel like I have no support for what I believe is the truth but everyone is making me feel like I am crazy. Where can I find a psychiatrist that is holistic as mentioned above in the article. Help.. Thank you.
